Join us in welcoming Brianna Ellis as our new conference coordinator. Ellis helped to coordinate the 2022 State of the Strait Conference, a meeting that brought together Great Lakes professionals and concerned citizens from the U.S. and Canada to address cleanup of the Detroit River. In April she earned her master's degree from the University of Michigan School for Environment and Sustainability. Ellis also works at the Cooperative Institute for Great Lakes Research where she coordinates projects monitoring HABs in lakes Erie and Huron. When she's not working, she enjoys insects, baking, and cross stitch. She lives in Ann Arbor, Michigan.

Nature-Based Climate Solutions, by the CCA’s Expert Panel on Canada’s Carbon Sinks Potential, was released today. The panel determined that nature-based climate solutions can provide a way to protect, restore, and manage ecosystems that sequester carbon and help the government to meet its climate goals.

On November 15, a Cooperative Training Partnership in Aquatic Toxicology and Ecology opened for application and will remain open until January 12, 2023. The Journal of Great Lakes Research, Volume 48, Issue 5 is now online. The cover image features an adult herring gull (Larus argentatus), which breed on the Laurentian Great Lakes. Biochemical and physical measurements of gull eggs have provided insights into the state of the Great Lakes for 50 years. In this issue, two articles summarize results from a study in Pukaskwa National Park on Lake Superior. At that location, herring gull populations have declined by 70% over the last 40 years. Serré et al. investigate the influence of diet on gull physiology, reproduction, and behavior while Hebert et al. examine how diet influences exposure to perfluoroalkyl acids.

The International Association for Great Lakes Research announces Jérôme Marty as its new executive director. Dr. Marty comes to IAGLR from his role as a project director at the Council of Canadian Academies, an organization in Ottawa, Ontario, working at the interface between science and policy. Dr. Marty has been involved with IAGLR for the past 10 years, including leadership roles managing the association’s annual research conference and serving on the IAGLR Board of Directors, most notably, as president in 2014.

The cover image features Tonle Sap Lake, an integral part of the Mekong River basin and the largest freshwater body in Southeast Asia, from an article titled "Dynamics of phosphorus fractions and bioavailability in a large shallow tropical lake characterized by monotonal flood pulse in Southeast Asia" by Sovannara Uk, Heejun Yang, Theng Vouchlay, Sok Ty, Siev Sokly, Try Sophal, Oeurng Chantha, and Yoshimura Chihiro.

Due to a low number of abstract submissions to the State of Lake Michigan Conference and the strain of hosting multiple meetings in a single year, the IAGLR Board of Directors has decided to cancel the conference, originally scheduled for October. We hope you'll join us next May in Toronto for the 66th annual Conference on Great Lakes Research.

You're in luck! We've extended the deadline until Friday, July 15 to submit a presentation or associated event for the State of Lake Michigan Conference, scheduled for October 24-26, 2022, in Traverse City, Michigan. Check out the list of sessions to help plan your submission. If you don't see a session that suits, feel free to submit under "General Contributions."
The Great Lakes Beach Association will be meeting too, and you may submit a presentation for their meeting by selecting the "Great Lakes Beach Association" session when you submit.
Thanks to everyone who submitted so far. It's shaping up to be a great conference on a great lake!
