The International Association for Great Lakes Research honored several professionals this week for their contributions to IAGLR and large lake science. The following awards were presented online at the association’s 64th annual Conference on Great Lakes Research.

Two long-time colleagues at NOAA’s Great Lakes Environmental Research Laboratory (GLERL) in Ann Arbor received top honors from the International Association for Great Lakes Research. Henry (“Hank”) Vanderploeg, chief of GLERL’s Ecosystems Dynamics Branch, received the IAGLR Lifetime Achievement Award. The John R. (Jack) Vallentyne Award went to Margaret Lansing, GLERL's chief of information services. The awards were presented online early today at IAGLR’s 64th annual Conference on Great Lakes Research.

Lake Ontario will take center stage this week, when scientists, natural resource managers, and others gather online for the 2021 State of Lake Ontario Conference (SOLO21). The conference will feature daily speakers and discussions, as well as more than 120 oral and poster presentations on topics such as climate change and shoreline resiliency, plastic pollution, Indigenous Peoples’ science, wetlands, native fish restoration, contaminants, harmful algal blooms, and invasive species.

Students are encouraged to submit a poster presentation for the virtual 2021 State of Lake Ontario Conference. The poster session will be held Wednesday, March 10 at 3 p.m. Student registration rates apply and include access to the entire conference: $95 for IAGLR members, $150 for nonmembers. Share your poster (as a PDF) with conference guests who work in research, policy, management, and education. Poster presenters will interact live with individuals and small groups of guests as they visit posters in virtual breakout rooms. Deadline February 5.

The fall 2020 issue of Lakes Letter, our member newsletter, is now online. This issue shares Indigenous perspectives, stories on efforts to connect Indigenous and Western knowledge, and resources to learn more.
