Start planning your submissions for IAGLR | JASM 2022! The Call for Abstracts is now online and the submission site will open soon. The deadline for submission is January 10. You're invited to submit an in-person oral presentation (12-minute talk or 5-minute lightning talk), an in-person poster presentation, or a virtual presentation available for asynchronous viewing only. Note that all presenters are required to submit a prerecorded version of their talk. Get started by reviewing the session list. Please direct any questions related to abstracts submission to Tricia Fry, Program Committee Coordinator, at tfry@fisheries.org.

NOAA's National Sea Grant College Program is sponsoring an eight-day Great Lakes Fisheries Science Training workshop in population and ecosystem dynamics, to be held during summer 2022. This workshop for undergratudate students will introduce participants to the study of fisheries science and will explore careers in fisheries ecology, management, and conservation Applications are due January 17, 2022.

We invite you to propose a scientific session for the State of Lake Erie Conference (SOLE22), to be held March 16–18 in Cleveland, Ohio. Hosted by the International Association for Great Lakes Research, the conference will feature two days of concurrent sessions tracks (composed of contributed abstracts), workshops, field trips, and associated meetings. Deadline: October 1.

IAGLR has lost a great friend in David Baker, who died of pneumonia on April 16 at age 84. The founder of Heidelberg University’s renowned National Center for Water Quality Research, he was aptly described by University of Toledo Lake Erie Center Director as the “father of tributary monitoring.” Read more about Dave's legacy in this tribute written by Ken Baker.

Two long-time colleagues at NOAA’s Great Lakes Environmental Research Laboratory (GLERL) in Ann Arbor received top honors from the International Association for Great Lakes Research. Henry (“Hank”) Vanderploeg, chief of GLERL’s Ecosystems Dynamics Branch, received the IAGLR Lifetime Achievement Award. The John R. (Jack) Vallentyne Award went to Margaret Lansing, GLERL's chief of information services. The awards were presented online early today at IAGLR’s 64th annual Conference on Great Lakes Research.

Lake Ontario will take center stage this week, when scientists, natural resource managers, and others gather online for the 2021 State of Lake Ontario Conference (SOLO21). The conference will feature daily speakers and discussions, as well as more than 120 oral and poster presentations on topics such as climate change and shoreline resiliency, plastic pollution, Indigenous Peoples’ science, wetlands, native fish restoration, contaminants, harmful algal blooms, and invasive species.
