PhD, Masters and Senior undergraduate students have until Monday, March 2nd 2015 deadline to submit applications to various scholarships; including the IAGLR Scholarship ($2,000), Paul W. Rodgers Scholarship ($2,000), Norman S. Baldwin Fishery Science Scholarship ($6,000), and the new David M. Dolan Scholarship ($3,000). View Scholarship guidelines.

Species invasion scenarios reported on cbsnews.com

Killer shrimp could invade the Great Lakes, an article appearing today on cbsnews.com, cites a study recently reported in the Journal of Great Lakes Research. The future of species invasions in the Great Lakes-St. Lawrence River basin identifies trends in invasion pathways and predicts future invaders of the Great Lakes basin.

2015 Call for Abstracts is Closed

Bringing Conservation to Cities

A new book shares the story of how innovative partnerships are making nature part of everyday urban life in the automobile capitals of the U.S. and Canada. These efforts are aimed at developing the next generation of conservationists in urban areas because that is where most people on our planet live. Bringing Conservation to Cities: Lessons from Building the Detroit River International Wildlife Refuge was written by Dr. John Hartig, who serves as Refuge Manager of the Detroit River International Wildlife Refuge. "Most urban residents are disconnected from the natural world," notes Hartig, a long-time IAGLR member and former president. "As a global community, we cannot afford to allow this disconnection to continue." The book is published by Aquatic Ecosystem Health and Management Society as part of its Ecovision World Monograph Series and is available from AEHMS, MSU Press, and Amazon.

Final Call for Abstracts

The deadline to submit Abstracts for the 2015 IAGLR Conference is Friday, January 23!   The 58th Annual Conference on Great Lakes Research will be held May 25-29, University of Vermont, in Burlington, VT.  Abstract submissions for both oral and poster presentations are welcome.
 

Michigan Sea Grant 2015 Request for Proposals

Michigan Sea Grant is soliciting pre-proposals for innovative research projects for the 2016 – 2018 funding period. Michigan Sea Grant will support three types of research during this funding cycle:

  • Integrated Assessment (IA) Research Projects - Research that uses Integrated Assessment methods to address important social and ecological issues affecting the Great Lakes, up to $75,000 per year.
  • Core Research Projects - Core research on issues currently affecting the Great Lakes ecosystem, up to $115,000 per year.
  • Michigan Sea Grant Graduate Student Research Fellowships - Graduate student (M.S. or Ph.D.) research fellowships for one or two years, up to $80,000 per year.

IA and Core Research pre-proposals are due March 6, 2015. Fellowship proposals are due May 29, 2015.
