In an unprecedented statement released today, 110 aquatic scientific societies representing more than 80,000 scientists worldwide sound the alarm for the devastating impact of climate change on the world’s freshwater and marine ecoystems. The International Association for Great Lakes Research (IAGLR) joins this call to drastically curtail global greenhouse gas emissions to avoid the worst impacts of human-caused climate change on these aquatic ecosystems. Unless urgent action is taken to reduce emissions, scientists predict catastrophic impacts to human health, fisheries, and economies.

The murder and unjust treatment within the Black community in the United States has focused the world’s attention on the issue of justice, equality, diversity, and inclusion, especially with respect to race. The International Association for Great Lakes Research is saddened by these horrific events and recognizes our responsibility to clarify and uphold the core principles at the heart of the association. Our vision is a peaceful world in which large lake ecosystems are valued and healthy; where these ecosystems inspire curiosity, awe, love and respect, and stewardship from all people. To achieve this vision, IAGLR is committed to a membership that reflects the diversity of all IAGLR constituencies by ensuring that our community provides a welcoming and inclusive environment to those who are racially marginalized and minoritized, disadvantaged, disabled, and independent of gender and sexual orientation. In the next year, IAGLR will be rolling out new diversity initiatives to do more for diversity in the sciences and IAGLR. We must use recent events as a catalyst for change; we must all champion justice, equality, diversity, and inclusion in practicing our science.

In a 6-3 ruling today, the U.S. Supreme Court rejected an attempt to restrict the Clean Water Act to direct discharges of pollutants, which would have categorically excluded pollutants conveyed through groundwater. In County of Maui v. Hawaii Wildlife Fund, the Court determined that groundwater that reaches surface water can be the "functional equivalent" of direct discharge into surface water. Last November, IAGLR had joined the Consortium of Aquatic Science Societies in filing an amici curiae brief with the Supreme Court in support of the Hawaii Wildlife Fund. Much of the marjority's opinion is consistent with what the aquatic science societies wrote in the brief, which was cited by Justice Stephen Breyer in writing the majority opinion.
