Apr 4, 2019

The Russian Federation's Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment proposes changes to discharge permissions that would increase nutrient loads in Lake Baikal, the world's deepest freshwater lake (see The Moscow Times story for further information). IAGLR has written to the ministry, urging reconsideration of these proposed changes. Read on for the full text of the letter from IAGLR President Michael Twiss, or download a copy.

WOTUS webinar Feb. 27; Formal comments requested

Feb 25, 2019

Join our friends at the American Fisheries Society on Feb. 27, from 1 to 2 p.m. EST, for an informative and timely webinar to learn more about the proposed WOTUS rule, the science that contradicts it, and how to submit an effective regulatory comment. This newly proposed rule to revise the definition of waters of the United Sates aims to exclude many wetlands and headwater streams critical to fish, fisheries, and ecosystem services in the Great Lakes basin.

A 60-day public comment period on the proposed rule will follow its publication in the Federal Register. We encourage IAGLR members to submit formal comments to highlight proposed impacts on the Great Lakes. Send comments to Scott McNaught (treasurer@iaglr.org), who will compile comments into a response letter from the  association.

Longer WOTUS comment period, more public hearings requested

Feb 22, 2019

With the public comment period for the proposed WOTUS rule on the horizon, IAGLR joins other aquatic societies to request an extension of this period from 60 to 200 days, as well as for additional public hearings to be held. Nine member societies of  the Consortium of Aquatic Science Societies made the request to EPA and the U.S Army Corps of Engineers today, noting "60 days is not sufficient to allow for an adequate, scientifically defensible review, as called for by the complexity and scope of the proposed rule. Additionally, a robust and geographically extensive public meeting program on a par with that of the 2015 Clean Water Rule is important in order to ensure that stakeholder concerns are identified and addressed, and that there is sufficient time for the publicto conduct a thorough and science-based review of the proposed rule."
