We welcome your nominations for the John R. (Jack) Vallentyne Award, which recognizes important and sustained efforts to inform and educate the public and policymakers on large lakes issues. Submit by the new deadline, April 11.


IAGLR joins Michigan organizations in voicing concerns over withholding federal funding to nonprofits

IAGLR joined more than 500 organizations from Michigan's nonprofit and philanthropic sector in signing a letter to Michigan's Congressional Delegation voicing our concerns with the continued efforts to withhold federal funding committed to nonprofits. "The ongoing uncertainty caused by the federal administration’s attempted broad and arbitrary freeze on funding erodes long-standing public/private collaborations that reliably drive Michigan's social and economic vitality."


2025 GLFC Student Travel Awards

The Great Lakes Fishery Commission is now accepting applications for the 2025 GLFC Student Travel Award. Two awards are available for up to USD $1,500 each. Applications are due April 15th, and awards are announced early May. The award promotes academic excellence by encouraging students to present their graduate research results at scientific conferences. The travel award is awarded annually to M.Sc. or Ph.D. students whose research is likely to make a significant contribution to understanding Great Lakes aquatic ecology and fishery science. Join us June 2–6, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, for IAGLR's 68th Annual Conference on Great Lakes Research. A great program is in store with four days of inspiring scientific sessions and speakers centered around our theme Creating Great Lakes Resilience. The International Association for Great Lakes Research (IAGLR) and the African Center for Aquatic Research and Education (ACARE) are pleased to announce a formal partnership through a newly signed memorandum of understanding (MOU) for the years 2025–2029. This collaboration builds on shared goals of advancing freshwater science, promoting education and mentorship, and fostering global cooperation in large lake research.

Call for IAGLR Award nominations

Each year, IAGLR recognizes excellence through its many awards. We invite you to nominate worthy candidates—it's your chance to recognize outstanding contributions in the large lake community. IAGLR members can nominate people for our three professional awards: the IAGLR Lifetime Achievement Award, the IAGLR Large Lake Champion Award, and the John R. (Jack) Vallentyne Award. The deadline is February 1.

Everyone is welcome to nominate a notable article from volume 50 (2024) of the Journal of Great Lakes Research for a journal award. Nominations will be considered for one of the following awards depending on the career status of their lead author: the Chandler-Misener Award, the Elsevier Student Award, and the Elsevier Early Career Scientist Award. The deadline is January 15.

We invite you to take part in IAGLR's 68th Annual Conference on Great Lakes Research. The conference will be held June 2–6, 2025, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, as a hybrid event. Forty-seven sessions have been proposed to complement the theme Creating Great Lakes Resilience. We welcome abstract submissions for both oral and poster presentations. Most aquatic scientists—from students to senior-level managers—have learned about the value of equity, diversity, inclusion, and accessibility (EDIA), but what does that actually look like in practice? This webinar brings together a diverse panel of aquatic scientists to share their positionalities and strategies for actionable EDIA in their studies and/or work life. The goal of the webinar is to facilitate knowledge exchange between panelist members and the audience, so that all participants gain new insights on achieving effective EDIA outcomes. Co-hosted by IAGLR and the Society of Canadian Aquatic Sciences.

Join us November 6, 8 a.m. EST, for the webinar Data Sovereignty of Indigenous People´s Earth Observations. Indigenous data sovereignty refers to the right of Indigenous peoples to control the collection, ownership and application of data about themselves, their communities, lands, territories and waters. In Earth sciences, the observations of Indigenous Peoples represent an important source of information to understand natural phenomena but the ability of indigenous peoples, communities and nations to steward and control data that is created with or about themselves, has been mismanaged and, sometimes, overlooked. In this webinar we will explore cases from the perspective of Indigenous Peoples on how to better recognize the inherent rights to their knowledges. This is the second in a series.
