John R. (Jack) Vallentyne Award

The John R. (Jack) Vallentyne Award recognizes important and sustained efforts to inform and educate the public and policymakers on large lakes issues, thereby raising awareness and support for large lake protection and restoration. Established in 2008, the inaugural award was given posthumously to its namesake, long-time IAGLR member and environmental scientist and educator, John R. (Jack) Vallentyne (a.k.a. "Johnny Biosphere"). Recipients are nominated by IAGLR members. The winner is announced at the annual Conference on Great Lakes Research and encouraged to attend.


Purpose

The John R. (Jack) Vallentyne Award recognizes important and sustained efforts to inform and educate the public and policymakers on large lakes issues, thereby raising awareness and support for large lake protection and restoration.

Eligibility

To be eligible for this award, the nominee should meet the following requirements:

  • Individuals or teams (individuals who together contributed to education/outreach outcomes)
  • Have contributed substantially to the education and outreach in the large lake community (children and/or adults) for 20 years or more and their outreach accomplishments should be beyond the local community
  • Can work on any large lake, including North American Great Lakes, African Great Lakes, or others
  • Educators, environmental journalists, and others bridging the gap between the science community and an informed, involved public are eligible for this award
  • Membership in IAGLR is not necessary

We encourage nominations of people from diverse identities perspectives, and experiences.

Nomination Package

Your nomination package should include the following:

  • A nomination letter from an IAGLR member, clearly indicating how the nominee made significant contributions to the advancement of understanding of large lake regional issues and problems through education and/or outreach activities targeted to the general public (children and/or adults) and policymakers
  • The nominee’s resume
  • Minimum of three letters of support, preferably from IAGLR members

Criteria for Judging

Nominees are evaluated on the following criteria:

  • Contribution: The significance of the education/outreach in the basins of the large lakes
  • Scope: The influence of the contribution beyond a local large lake community.
  • Impact: The translation of large lake research results into education/outreach activities that likely had positive impacts on scientifically based resource management and/or policy decisions, or likely contributed to the building of a great lakes constituency in support of great lakes protection and restoration.
