Local and International Freshwater Scientists Meet in Burlington

What’s the latest science on microplastics pollution in our lakes? What can be done to protect drinking water from harmful algae blooms? Which fish species are now safe to eat? These questions, and many others, will be explored at the 58th International Conference on Great Lakes Research, which will draw more than 650 scientists from around the world to the University of Vermont in Burlington, VT, May 25-29.

Available on the GLFC website, eForum contains articles related to the commission’s program, Great Lakes fishing, and the long-term sustainability of this incredible resource.

Lake Erie Committee Announces Walleye and Yellow Perch Harvest Levels for 2015

Fishery managers from Michigan, New York, Ohio, Ontario and Pennsylvania—the five jurisdictions that manage the Lake Erie fishery—agreed to a total allowable catch (TAC) of 4.114 million walleye and 10.528 million pounds of yellow perch for 2015. Great Lakes Fishery Commission offers Student Travel Awards

The Great Lakes Fishery Commission Student Travel Award seeks to promote academic excellence by providing funds to student scientists to present graduate research results at scientific conferences.  Two travel awards will be provided to M.Sc. or Ph.D. students whose research is likely to make a significant contribution to the understanding of Great Lakes aquatic ecology and fishery science.  Full-time M.Sc. or Ph.D. students whose proposed research topic is relevant to the Great Lakes and who have not previously received this award are eligible.  Applicants may seek funds (typically up to $1,500 per award) to attend and make an oral presentation of research at any conference.  Recipients will be announced in early May.

R workshop to be offered at IAGLR 2015

The Quantitative Fisheries Center of Michigan State University’s Department of Fisheries and Wildlife is once again offering an Introduction to R Workshop at the annual conference. This workshop will introduce beginners to the R statistical analysis software. It will cover the R environment, importing/exporting and organizing data, using and creating functions, graphing, and basic statistical analyses such as regression (linear and nonlinear) and ANOVA.

Species invasion scenarios reported on cbsnews.com

Killer shrimp could invade the Great Lakes, an article appearing today on cbsnews.com, cites a study recently reported in the Journal of Great Lakes Research. The future of species invasions in the Great Lakes-St. Lawrence River basin identifies trends in invasion pathways and predicts future invaders of the Great Lakes basin.
