Great Lakes Science Leaders Honored

Ann Arbor, Mich. — The International Association for Great Lakes Research (IAGLR) recently honored several professionals for their contributions to IAGLR and Great Lakes science. The following awards were presented at the association’s 58th annual Conference on Great Lakes Research

The Chandler-Meisner Award went to Donald Scavia, J.David Allan, Kristin K. Arend, Steven Bartell, Dmitry Beletsky, Nate S. Bosch, Stephen B. Brandt, Ruth D. Briland, Irem Daloğlu, JosephV. DePinto, David M. Dolan, Mary Anne Evans, Troy M. Farmer, Daisuke Goto, HaejinHan, Tomas O. Höök, Roger Knight, Stuart A. Ludsin, DoranMason, Anna M. Michalak, R.Peter Richards, James J. Roberts, Daniel K. Rucinski, Edward Rutherford, David J. Schwab, Timothy M. Sesterhenn, Hongyan Zhang, and Yuntao Zhou for their paper, "Assessing and addressing there-eutrophication of Lake Erie: Central basin hypoxia," Journal of Great Lakes Research 40: 226-246.

The Chandler-Misener Award is presented annually to the author(s) of the peer-reviewed paper in the most recent complete volume of the Journal of Great Lakes Research judged to be "most notable." Papers are evaluated on the basis of originality, contribution and presentation. Established in 1974, the award honors D.C. Chandler and A.D. Misener, IAGLR's first presidents.

The Anderson-Everett Award was presented to James Bence, from Michigan State University. A long-standing member, Bence was elected to the IAGLR Board of Directors in 2011 and served as president in 2012-2013. He continues to serve as chair of the Publications Committee. This award recognizes important and continued contributions to the Association over a period of years and honors the efforts of David Anderson and Margaret Everett for their significant early contributions to the association and the Great Lakes

The John R. (Jack) Vallentyne Award went to David Poulson, senior associate director of Michigan State University's Knight Center for Environmental Journalism. This award recognizes important and sustained efforts to inform and educate the public and policymakers on Great Lakes issues, thereby raising awareness and support for Great Lakes protection and restoration. Its namesake is long-time IAGLR member and environmental scientist and educator, John R. (Jack) Vallentyne (a.k.a. "Johnny Biosphere").

 The Lifetime Achievement Award for Important and Continued Contributions to Great Lakes Research was awarded to Charles Kerfoot, a professor at Michigan Technological University. "From the books that Dr. Kerfoot edited to the Great Lakes Research Center that he conceived and brought to fruition at the Michigan Technological University, he has had a far-reaching influence on the large lakes community and limnology in general," notes Dr. Marianne Moore, Wellesley College professor. "Dr. Kerfoot is a singular scientist who thinks big and creatively in all aspects of his work.... In so doing, he has set a benchmark of achievement that few others can match."

This year's Editor's Award was presented to Wendylee Stott, USGS Great Lakes Science Center. The Editor's Award is presented for "outstanding support of the journal's review process." The award recognizes the crucial role played by peer review in assuring the quality of the Journal of Great Lakes Research.

The JGLR/Elsevier Early Career Scientist Award went to Christopher Wellen, University of Toronto, for his article "Accommodating environmental thresholds and extreme events in hydrological models: A Bayesian approach,” JGLR 40(Supp. 3): 102-116. This award, valued at $750, scientist at the early stages of his or her career who is first author on the top-ranked article in the Journal of Great Lakes Research. Co-authors include George Arhonditsis, Tanya Long, and Duncan Boyd.

IAGLR Certificates of Appreciation

IAGLR President Doug Kane presented certificates of appreciation to the following people for their service to the association:

  • The JGLR Outgoing Associate Editor's Appreciate Award went to Carlo DeMarchi, John Carroll University, and Tom Stewart, Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources.
  • IAGLR Board of Directors Appreciation Award certificates went to Jérome Marty, Department of Fisheries and Oceans, Val Klump, University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, Véronique Hiriart-Baer, Environment Canada, Jenilee Gobin, Trent University, and Stuart Ludsin, Ohio State University. They faithfully served on the IAGLR Board and have completed their terms of service.
  • The IAGLR Conference Appreciation Award went to co-chairs Ellen Marsden and Jason Stockwell of University of Vermont.
