The John R. (Jack) Vallentyne Award recognizes important and sustained efforts to inform and educate the public and policymakers on great lakes issues, thereby raising awareness and support for great lakes protection and restoration. Individuals or teams eligible for this award can work on any great lake of the world, including North American Great Lakes, African Great Lakes, or others. The IAGLR Communications and Outreach Committee nominates a recipient for this honor, which is awarded by the IAGLR Board of Directors. Established in 2008, the inaugural award was given posthumously to its namesake, long-time IAGLR member and environmental scientist and educator, John R. (Jack) Vallentyne (a.k.a. "Johnny Biosphere").
