The sub-Arctic, October, ice is forming at the margin of the lake, and we are camping on Sub Island 2 in the middle of Yellowknife Bay, Great Slave Lake. We led an expedition to catalog and describe cisco diversity in Great Slave Lake. In the image, we are processing ciscoes for length, weight in air, and weight in water to calculate buoyancy, capturing a digital image for shape analysis, and collecting tissue samples for lipid, fatty acid, and stable isotope analyses. It was 0200hrs and it was cold.
