The USGS Great Lakes Science Center located in Ann Arbor, MI is seeking to fill a summer position in its aquatic research laboratory/wetlab with a student services contractor.

The candidate may be involved with the following tasks in the lab:  1) feeding and maintaining fish eggs, hatched fry, juveniles, and mature adults, 2) cleaning hatching jars, fry inserts, and large recirculating aquaculture tanks, 3) handling of moderately sized live and dead fish (~0.5 -5 kg) for tagging, weights, and measurements 4) maintenance and cleaning of swim-tunnels, 5) calibration of equipment for swim-tunnels 6) handling of chemicals used for system cleaning or disinfection, or anesthesia and euthanasia of fish 7) collection of wild or hatchery fish and 8) other general fish culture duties as assigned. The candidate will work with a biologist (lab manager or PI) or technician learning these tasks as they go. A student displaying an aptitude for the tasks for which they are being trained will graduate to more difficult tasks. Additional opportunities are available with data processing and manuscript writing for former or ongoing projects.  Appointment to this position, however, will not convey permanent status in the Federal service. Pay is at least $23.18 per hour, but includes no medical benefits or overtime. Temporary appointees are not covered by the Federal Employee Retirement System and are ineligible for Federal life, dental, or vision insurance.The candidate would ideally need to work around 10 hours per week during regular business hours.

 

Qualifications:

An ecology, biology, or aquaculture background is desired, and interest in Great Lakes fisheries. An ideal candidate will have experience with/or basic understanding of fish care and rearing, a keen sense for attention to detail, and a desire to learn. They should also show motivation and compatibility with their supervisors/co-workers. A student services contractor will need to be either in school working towards a degree or obtained a degree within the past 12 months.
