The deepwater science section at the United States Geological Survey-Great Lakes Science Center (USGS-GLSC) in Ann Arbor, MI, is hiring one (1) student contractor to assist with field and laboratory activities associated with lake-wide fish population monitoring activities during the 2026-27 field seasons.  Incumbents will participate on trawl, acoustics, and gill net surveys conducted in Lakes Michigan and Huron and occasionally in other lakes.  Fish surveys focus on documenting status of prey fish and their predators.  In the laboratory, students will process biological samples collected during field surveys.      

Applicants will be expected to perform tasks in the field, laboratory, and office.  Field work will involve working aboard large research ships and on small vessels in inclement weather

Pay:  $21-$30/hr depending on education and experience (no benefits).  Additional information on student services contractor positions with USGS can be found here.

Qualifications

Applicants should have a background and interest in aquatic ecology and fisheries science and (1) be enrolled in a relevant program (biology, zoology, ecology, fisheries, natural resource management) at a 4-year college or university OR (2) have graduated from a 4-year college or university within the past 12 months.

A valid driver’s license is required.
