IAGLR Scholarship

The IAGLR Scholarship is awarded annually to promising Ph.D. students whose dissertation research is likely to make a significant contribution to the understanding of large lakes. Winner(s) are announced at IAGLR's annual Conference on Great Lakes Research. Recipients are expected to present their research at the conference.


Purpose

The IAGLR Scholarship is awarded annually to promising Ph.D. students who are IAGLR members and whose research is likely to make a significant contribution to the understanding of large lakes. Funded by IAGLR, the scholarship is intended to promote academic excellence by encouraging young scientists to undertake graduate research in Great Lakes ecosystem health and to enter the field of Great Lakes science.

Number and Value of Awards

  • Up to two scholarships *
  • US $2,000 each *
  • Complimentary IAGLR membership (includes electronic subscription to the Journal of Great Lakes Research)

* Number and value depends on funds available and is at the discretion of the Awards Committee.

Eligibility

To be eligible for this scholarship, the applicant must

  • be a Ph.D. student whose proposed research topic is relevant to large lakes
  • be a current IAGLR member
  • not have received the award previously
  • not be a current member of the IAGLR Board of Directors or part of a current board member's immediate family (parents, children, spouse, siblings)

Application Elements

A complete application is composed of the following:

  1. Application from the student, submitted online. In addition to your name, contact information, IAGLR member status, affiliation, and education, be prepared to submit the following:
    • Brief title and extended abstract of dissertation research
    • Statement of relevance of the project understanding large lakes
    • Current curriculum vitae (PDF)
    • Transcripts, unoffical accepted (PDF)
    • Name, affiliation, and email of person providing the letter of endorsement
  2. Letter of endorsement from a supervising professor, sent directly to scholarships@iaglr.org with the student's and award name in the subject line. The letter should be in PDF format and indicate the following:
    • Name, address, e-mail, and telephone number of major professor
    • Statement of student's stage of progress and anticipated time to completion of degree
    • Endorsement of student's academic ability, aptitude, and eligibility

Criteria for Judging

Applications will be evaluated based on the following criteria:

  • Academic excellence
  • Scientific merit
  • Presentation
  • Originality
  • Contribution to the understanding of large lakes

Terms and Conditions

The IAGLR Scholarship will be awarded with the recipient’s prior understanding and acknowledgement that they will present their supported research at IAGLR's annual Conference on Great Lakes Research.
