IAGLR Statement on Justice, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion

Jun 4, 2020

The murder and unjust treatment within the Black community in the United States has focused the world’s attention on the issue of justice, equality, diversity, and inclusion, especially with respect to race. The International Association for Great Lakes Research is saddened by these horrific events and recognizes our responsibility to clarify and uphold the core principles at the heart of the association. Our vision is a peaceful world in which large lake ecosystems are valued and healthy; where these ecosystems inspire curiosity, awe, love and respect, and stewardship from all people. To achieve this vision, IAGLR is committed to a membership that reflects the diversity of all IAGLR constituencies by ensuring that our community provides a welcoming and inclusive environment to those who are racially marginalized and minoritized, disadvantaged, disabled, and independent of gender and sexual orientation. In the next year, IAGLR will be rolling out new diversity initiatives to do more for diversity in the sciences and IAGLR. We must use recent events as a catalyst for change; we must all champion justice, equality, diversity, and inclusion in practicing our science.
