IAGLR announces 2026 journal, editor awards

The International Association for Great Lakes Research recognized several scientists at the association’s joint conference with the Society of Canadian Aquatic Sciences in Winnipeg for notable papers published in last year's Journal of Great Lakes Research, as well as for their outstanding support of the journal.

Chandler-Misener Award
This award went to Jay A. Austin, Eric J. Anderson, Andrew D. Gronewold, Steven A. Ruberg, Craig A. Stow, and Mathew G. Wells for their paper “Winter thermal structure across the Laurentian Great Lakes” published in the Journal of Great Lakes Research 51, Issue 3, 2025. IAGLR presents the Chandler-Misener Award annually to the author(s) of the peer-reviewed paper in the most recent complete volume of the journal judged to be “most notable.” Papers are evaluated based on originality, contribution, and presentation. Established in 1974, the award honors D.C. Chandler and A.D. Misener, IAGLR's first presidents.

Elsevier Early Career Scientist Award
Tyler Harrow-Lyle (Environment and Climate Change Canada) received this recognition for the article “Developing the first binational dreissenid mussel biomass map for Lake Erie,Journal of Great Lakes Research 51, Issue 6, 2025. Coauthors include Ashley K. Elgin, Mark D. Rowe, Peter J. Alsip, Lyubov E. Burlakova, Alexander Y. Karatayev, Megan McCusker, Reza Valipour, and David C. Depew.

Elsevier Student Author Award
This year's recipient is Herbert Nakiyende (National Fisheries Resources Research Institute and Makerere University) for the article “Light-based small pelagic species fishing in Lake Albert: Divergent perceptions, conflicts, and implications for multispecies fishery management,” Journal of Great Lakes Research 51, Issue 5, 2025. This award recognizes a student scientist who is first author on a top-ranked article in the journal. Coauthors include Jackson Efitre, Anthony Basooma, Mbilingi Bwambale, Dismas Mbabazi, Joyce Akumu, Veronica Mpomwenda, Winnie Nkalubo, Anthony Taabu-Munyaho, Samuel Bassa, Esther Kagoya, Bairon Mugeni, Gladys Bwanika, and Lauren Chapman.

Editor's Awards
These awards are given by the journal editor for outstanding support of the review process for the Journal of Great Lakes Research.

  • The Outstanding Associate Editor 2025 Award was presented to Michael Twiss (Algoma University).
  • Scott McNaught (Central Michigan University) received the Outstanding Reviewer 2025 Award.
