IAGLR IDEA+ Research Scholarship Application Procedures

Purpose: The IAGLR Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, and Accessibility+ (IDEA+) Research Scholarship is awarded annually to support research that adds to the diversity of perspectives regarding large lake science, management, education, communication, policy and community.

Number and Value of Awards: Up to two $2,000 (USD) scholarships will be awarded each year to support students' research; however, the Awards Committee reserves the right to distribute award(s) as necessary. In addition, the scholarship winners will receive a one-year membership in IAGLR, including a subscription to the Journal of Great Lakes Research. The awardee(s) will receive the award(s) at the annual conference.

Eligibility: Applicants must be master's or Ph.D. students at the time of application, whose proposed research topic is relevant to large lake research, and who have not previously received the award. Preference will be given to individuals from historically marginalized communities.  

Application Elements: A complete application is composed of the following:

  1. Application form.
  2. Brief title and extended abstract of proposed research, including a description on how this research adds to the diversity of perspectives regarding Large Lakes science, management, education, communication, policy and community..
  3. Current curriculum vitae.
  4. Letter of endorsement from a supervising professor, sent directly to [email protected] with the student's and award name in the subject line. The letter should be in PDF format and indicate the following:
    • Name, address, e-mail, and telephone number of major professor;
    • Statement of student's stage of progress and anticipated time to completion of degree;
    • Endorsement of student's application.

Criteria for Judging: Applications will be evaluated on the basis of scientific merit, academic excellence, presentation, originality, and relevance of the graduate student's current research to the scholarship's goals. 

Terms and Conditions of Awards: The IAGLR IDEA+ Research Scholarship will be awarded with the recipient’s prior understanding and acknowledgement that an oral presentation of the research will be made at an IAGLR annual conference.
