IAGLR Scholarship Regulations and Application Procedures

Purpose: The IAGLR Scholarship is awarded annually to promising Ph.D. students who are IAGLR members and whose research is likely to make a significant contribution to the understanding of large lakes. (Students will recover the cost of IAGLR membership as reduced registration fees if they attend the annual meeting.) Funded by IAGLR, the scholarships are intended to promote academic excellence by encouraging young scientists to undertake graduate research in Great Lakes ecosystem health and to enter the field of Great Lakes science.

Number and Value of Awards:  Up to two $2,000 (US currency) scholarships will be awarded each year, however the Awards Committee reserves the right to distribute award(s) as necessary.  In addition, the scholarship winners will receive a one-year membership in IAGLR, including a subscription to the Journal of Great Lakes Research. The winner(s) will receive the award(s) at the banquet for the annual meeting.

Eligibility:  Applicants must be Ph.D. students at the time of application, who are members of IAGLR, have not previously received the award, and whose proposed research topic is relevant to large lakes are eligible.

Application Elements: A complete application is composed of the following:

  1. Application form.
  2. Brief title and extended abstract of dissertation research, including a statement of why the research will make a significant contribution to understanding large lakes (no more than 2 single-spaced pages).
  3. Current curriculum vitae.
  4. Letter of endorsement from a supervising professor, sent directly to [email protected] with the student's and award name in the subject line. The letter should be in PDF format and indicate the following:
    • Name, address, e-mail, and telephone number of major professor;
    • Statement of student's stage of progress, and anticipated time to completion of degree;
    • Student's academic ability, aptitude and eligibility. 
  5. Transcript(s) for past 2 years.

Criteria for Judging: Applications will be judged on the basis of academic excellence, scientific merit, presentation, originality, and contribution to the understanding of large lakes.

Terms and Conditions of Awards: The IAGLR Scholarship will be awarded with the student's prior understanding and acknowledgement that an oral presentation of the research will be made at an IAGLR annual meeting.
