More than 100 years of heavy industrial and urban development in Hamilton, Ontario, substantially degraded the surrounding ecosystems, earning its harbor the designation as a Great Lakes Area of Concern. A pivotal project in restoring impaired uses and eventually delisting Hamilton Harbour as an Area of Concern is now underway to remediate contaminated sediment at Randle Reef. This represents the largest contaminated sediment remediation project in the Canadian Great Lakes. This cleanup is an integral and essential part of the region’s revitalization strategy.
