IAGLR announces journal, editor awards

MILWAUKEE — The International Association for Great Lakes Research (IAGLR) recognized several scientists for notable papers published in last year's Journal of Great Lakes Research, as well as for their outstanding support of the journal. The following awards were presented at the association’s 68th Annual Conference on Great Lakes Research last week in Milwaukee.

Chandler-Misener Award
This award went to Richard P. Barbiero, Lyubov E. Burlakova, James M. Watkins, Alexander Y. Karatayev, Barry M. Lesht for their paper “The benthic nepheloid layer in the offshore waters of the Great Lakes and its post-dreissenid disappearance” published in the Journal of Great Lakes Research 50, Issue 5, 2024. IAGLR presents the Chandler-Misener Award annually to the author(s) of the peer-reviewed paper in the most recent complete volume of the journal judged to be “most notable.” Papers are evaluated based on originality, contribution, and presentation. Established in 1974, the award honors D.C. Chandler and A.D. Misener, IAGLR's first presidents.

Elsevier Early Career Scientist Award
Bianca Possamai (University of Vermont) received this recognition for the article “Are lakemounts hotspots of productivity and biodiversity?,” Journal of Great Lakes Research 50, Issue 6, 2024. Coauthors include Ellen Marsden, John Janssen, Michael D. Rennie, Thomas R. Hrabik, and Jason D. Stockwell.

Elsevier Student Author Award
This year's recipient is Courtney Taylor (Trent University) for the article “Regional predatory fish diets following a regime shift in Lake Huron,” Journal of Great Lakes Research 50, Issue 2, 2024. This award recognizes a student scientist who is first author on a top-ranked article in the journal. Coauthors include Ryan Lauzon, Chris Davis, Vicki Lee, and Erin S.Dunlop.

Editor's Awards
These awards are given by the journal editor for outstanding support of the review process for the Journal of Great Lakes Research.

  • The Outstanding Associate Editor 2024 Award was presented to R. Michael McKay (University of Windsor, Great Lakes Institute for Enviromental Research).
  • Brandon Gerig (University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee) received the Outstanding Reviewer 2024 Award.
