Communicating Your Message to Policy Makers

Session: 22. - How to Talk Science so Policy will Listen, and Listen so Science will Talk?

Dianne Saxe, Environmental Commissioner of Ontario, [email protected]

Abstract

The Environmental Commissioner of Ontario, Dianne Saxe, will offer insights on how she and her office motivate action from Ontario’s top policy makers. To effectively inform and persuade key decision makers, the Environmental Commissioner must translate complex research into clear, digestible and relevant information. Delivering the right message to the right audience is the best way to drive change.

Commissioner Saxe will also talk about the important role of Ontario’s Environmental Bill of Rights. This law, through the Environmental Registry, gives the public (including scientists and academics) the opportunity to comment and have an impact on significant environmental policy. The public plays an important role by providing expertise and holding government to account for its policy decisions.
