Increasing global participation in IAGLR

Jan 12, 2018

IAGLR seeks to engage members from nations other than the United States and Canada. Doing so will help encourage representation of research—in the journal and at the conference—on lakes besides the North American Great Lakes, which currently dominate the association's activities.

A genuine international association for great lakes research would include members from nations other than Canada and the United States in its administration, formally represented by the IAGLR Board of Directors. The current IAGLR Bylaws (Article III, Section 2) allow for this, stating there must be at least nine members with at least three from the United States and three from Canada and that “Board members representing countries other than the United States or Canada may serve as necessary.”

In addition, the 2012 Great Lakes Water Quality Agreement Protocol, which drives much of the association’s research and conference activity, recognizes Tribal Governments, First Nations, and Métis as essential stakeholders to achieving its objectives. Representatives of these nations should also have an opportunity to serve on the IAGLR board. Additionally, IAGLR strives to increase its international scope by sponsoring a conference in Europe (2018) and supporting international travel to attend the annual conference.

Following discussion of this topic at the October 2017 board meeting, the March 2018 election will include the position for an additional board member.

We invite you to nominate yourself or others by forwarding names and affiliations of potential candidates to Elizabeth Hinchey Malloy and Paul Sibley, IAGLR Nominations Committee co-chairs, at [email protected].
