Abstract

The Great Lakes Sea Grant Network plays a central role in supplying partners and communities with applied solutions and the science-based information needed to better understand, manage and conserve Great Lakes resources. Operating across eight Sea Grant programs, the network focuses on healthy coastal ecosystems, sustainable fisheries and aquaculture, resilient communities and economies, and environmental literacy. Cross-cutting communities of practice facilitate knowledge sharing and collaboration on topics like harmful algal blooms, fisheries extension, and tourism. This provides a framework that researchers can use to link into on-the-ground outreach efforts and engage with Great Lakes communities. Similarly, Sea Grant’s unique partnerships between universities and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) allows for collaboration with a diverse suite of stakeholders who operate from local to basin-wide and national scales.
