Abstract

Several novel programs have been inititated at universities throughout the Great Lakes basin for purposes of training graduate students in sustainability for careers in research, public service, private consulting, and other avenues.  In certain cases these are ad hoc classes and in others these are part of a larger, degree-granting effort.  This presentation describes several sustainability training programs at Wayne State University in Detroit, MI that are transdisciplinary in nature and involve engaging students with the urban neighborhoods.  These programs include T-RUST (Transformative Research in Urban Sustainability Training), Graduate Certificate in Sustainable Engineering, and CLEAR (Center for Leadership in Environmental Awareness and Research).
