Abstract

It imperative that we study and understand the Great Lakes, however, their size and complexity make it challenging to conduct comprehensive research and monitoring. To combat this, in 2002, the United States and Canada committed to a collaborative, binational scientific effort now known as the Cooperative Science and Monitoring Initiative (CSMI). More recently, the CSMI effort has incorporated Sea Grant programs to explore the development of outreach materials that can effectively communicate complex CSMI results and their potential implications. This session represents a timely opportunity for CSMI contributors to convene following the 2018 the CSMI field season that focused on Lake Ontario. In this context I would like to; 1) briefly describe 2013 Lake Ontario CSMI outreach materials, 2) discuss ideas about outreach materials to represent the 2018 field season with the audience, and 3) identify some of the most potentially exciting and/or impactful findings from 2018 to highlight in future outreach materials. With this approach I hope to inform future outreach efforts and provide a framework for a discussion about the recently completed 2018 CSMI field season to end this session.
