Collaborative Research for Sustainable Development: Challenges and Opportunities from Lake Malawi

Session: 27. - Emerging Partnerships, Research, and Capacity in the African Great Lakes

Friday Njaya, Malawi Fisheries Department, [email protected]

Abstract

Freshwater resources in developing countries like Malawi are significant for communities for food, nutritional security, livelihoods, and income. It is necessary to successfully manage these resources for the populations who rely on these resources. However, among the challenges preventing successful management of these resources are a lack of coherent and relevant research agendas and limited knowledge to develop fisheries plans. Opportunities for strengthening cooperation between institutions around Lake Malawi/Nyasa/Niassa, within the African Great Lakes basin, and between north-south institutions are emerging. Such cooperation can lead to harnessing the availability of research infrastructure and resources, strengthen fisheries policies and strategies, and harmonize research agendas. Well-focused research will promote regional and global partnerships, innovative approaches and technologies, and lead to positively influencing policies to achieve many of the Sustainable Development Goals, thus enhancing conservation of natural resources, food and nutritional security, and poverty reduction. This talk focuses on the need for these collaborations, what they will look like, and the potential benefits for Lake Malawi/Nyasa/Niassa and all of the African Great Lakes.
