Characterizing the Uses and Values of Freshwater Coastal Sand Dunes

Abstract

Coastal sand dunes are of critical ecological importance, but little is known about the social and economic values of these dynamic ecosystems. The shorelines of the Great Lakes in Michigan are characterized by more than 275,000 acres of sand dune formations, which represent the largest area of freshwater coastal dunes in the world. Coastal area management often involves confronting tradeoffs between conservation and development. The objectives of this project were to characterize the social and economic values of coastal dunes in Michigan, and to catalyze a network of stakeholders to advocate for conservation of coastal dunes and to promote awareness of their ecological importance. We used a web-based platform to conduct an opt-in survey with questions related to recreation activities, travel spending, and social importance of dunes, along with spatial information used to map locations visited. The survey was conducted from May to October, 2017, and the dataset includes responses from 3,610 participants, with over 7,000 sites mapped. Respondents ranked scenic beauty, protection of a unique ecosystem, and protection for future generations as the most important social values of dunes. This project involved a unique partnership between researchers and conservation practitioners to advance understanding and sustainability of coastal dunes.
