ALUS Canada: Connecting Landowners, Researchers, and Decision-makers to Achieve Results

Session: 28. - Pilot Projects and Future Visions: Transdisciplinary Collaboration for Applied Research

Bryan Gilvesy, ALUS Canada, [email protected]

Abstract

ALUS Canada oversees community-developed and farmer-developed restoration and conservation activities across Canada.  The organization has pioneered large-scale native tall grass prairie restoration in southwestern Ontario and has restored many acres of wetlands, riparian buffers and upland habitats in the Great Lakes basin.  ALUS’ farmers and local Partnership Advisory Committees work closely with researchers focused on the relationship between nature and farming.  Specific areas of research have focused on pollinator, soil, carbon mitigation and sequestration, climate resiliency, species at risk, and Great Lakes protection.  Collaborative efforts create a virtuous circle ensuring research informs practice and policy. ALUS has created the conditions to increase landowner knowledge by rooting our program in local communities.
