Abstract

The Bay of Quinte was designated an Area of Concern in 1985, thereby paving the way for the creation of the Bay of Quinte Remedial Action Plan (BQRAP). As the program reaches its final stage and is delisted as an Area of Concern, the need for access to the long-term data collected becomes more important. Monitoring of the Bay of Quinte will occur through currently active monitoring programs conducted by governmental and non-governmental organizations separate from BQRAP. The database project was started as a pilot project in 2016 to collate and collect data from 1972 to 2014 through the Project Quinte program using the Water Information System Kisters (WISKi) database system. It has grown to encompass algae, zooplankton, ciliate, fish, aquatic macroinvertebrate and bird community information, as well as multiple water chemistry parameters, all in cooperation with program partners. As part of continued monitoring, partner agencies will be granted online access to the database through the Kisters Web Interoperability Server (KiWIS), allowing for comparison to previous conditions and delisting targets as monitoring continues. Continual updating of the database will aid in preventing the Bay of Quinte from returning to its previous state.
