Abstract

Sandy shoreline is an important coast type in China, which is associated with many nice beaches. But over the past three decades, with the economic development of coastal areas, many beaches in China have been affected in different ways.(1) Some reclamations  occupied the beaches;(2) Some coastal engineering broke the coastal dynamic balance, resulting in degradation of beaches;(3) Sand mining in the offshore area broke the lateral dynamic and sedimentary balance, causing beach erosion. To improve the sandy coasts situation, over 30 beach nourishment and restoration projects have been carried out in coastal provinces of China up to now. One of the most successes, Xiangluwan Beach, was given the title of China Habitat Environment Prize by Department of Building and Housing in 2017. These projects have improved the coastal protection capability while restoring the beaches, and gradually been recognized and accepted by people. We have established the beach storm effect model of south China coast and proposed a series of key technologies in beach nourishment, including optimization design of pipe culvert, auxiliary structure design and pebble feeding beach in high energy coast, etc. Integrating the experience and technology of beach nourishment in China, we published the Chinese Beach Nourishment Manual.
