Abstract

Competing interests in Michigan coastal dune resources (for outdoor recreation, tourism, housing development, etc.) have historically meant that dune stakeholders are either only parochially involved, or not engaged at all, in many key decisions that impact dunes' long-term health and management. In support of a related university-based research project using an online survey to characterize uses and values stakeholders associate with Great Lakes coastal sand dunes, non-governmental organizations simultaneously undertook an intensive engagement program focused specifically on outreach to, and engagement of, key dunes groups, users, and constituencies. Using a variety of innovative approaches and tools, including several live events (e.g., Michigan Dunes Summit and Dunes Day in Detroit), targeted social media campaigns, email outreach, and other approaches, the groups improved survey response rates and helped identify individuals that would likely be willing to engage dune issues in their communities. The results of this collaboration included: strong survey response rate; personal stories about dune experience and connection; and hundreds of personal photo submissions celebrating the dunes. These allowed researchers to generate better localized data about dune values and also helped foster a constituency of local leaders and businesses that are interested and engaged in using and supporting the research outcomes.
