Abstract

Under the Great Lakes Water Quality Agreement (GLWQA), the International Joint Commission (IJC) established the Great Lakes Science Advisory Board (SAB) to provide advice on research and scientific matters to the Commission and the Great Lakes Water Quality Board.  This presentation will introduce the role of IJC and provide an overview of the role, structure, and function of the SAB.  The ways that the SAB has influenced Great Lakes science and monitoring activities will be assessed, and illustrated by introducing the current crop of SAB projects that are the focus of the session’s other presentations.  The importance of independent and objective science advice to governments is particularly timely given the pressures and threats currently facing the Great Lakes.
