Abstract

The insights gained through the successful execution of multiple innovation competitions focused on the development of Internet of Things (IoT) and cloud computing solutions for real-time nutrient monitoring will be shared in this paper. By examining both organizer and participant perspectives, the talk will explore the programmatic structures and collaborative methods that the competition framework can leverage to stimulate rapid team formation and agile product development. Discussion of common logistical and technical challenges faced by program managers and competitors will be coupled with a study of mechanisms used to lower these barriers to success. Details of some innovative solutions that have resulted from these efforts will provided. Overall, this paper will provide a roadmap for a hackathon design with the goal of developing leading edge technical solutions to environmental smart sensing.
