Abstract

After more than 30 years, Professor G. Douglas Haffner retired from the University of Windsor in 2017. Doug completed his undergraduate degree at Queen’s University (Kingston) followed by a Ph.D. in 1974 from Royal Holloway College, University of London (UK). After graduation, Doug worked with the Ontario Ministry of the Environment, the International Joint Commission and Environment Canada. In 1986, he returned to academia as an Associate Professor/Associate Director of the Great Lakes Institute at the University of Windsor. In 1992, he became a full professor at Windsor and Director of its’ Great Lakes Institute for Environmental Research. Since 2001, he has been a Tier 1 Canada Research Chair. Doug has published more than 150 papers/book chapters that have advanced research in ecotoxicology, food web trophodynamics, limnology of ancient lakes and non-point source eutrophication of waterbodies. His career has focused on the Laurentian Great Lakes with important research in ancient and threatened lakes in Indonesia and China. His work in China led him to be named a Distinguished Research Fellow (Yunnan Normal University), Adjunct Professor (Southwest University), and Canadian Director of Three Gorges Reservoir Water Science Centre. This session will celebrate Doug’s contributions to great lakes science around the world.
