Abstract

The Great Lakes Aquatic Nonindigenous Species Information System (GLANSIS) is a detailed database that provides species profiles and interactive maps to track the spread of invasive species in Great Lakes waterways. While originally designed for use by scientists and environmental managers, GLANSIS also has great potential to be used as an outreach and education tool for students, K-12 teachers, citizen scientists, and other stakeholders interested in invasive species and how to stop them. In this talk, we will outline how to use and navigate the GLANSIS website, discuss how teachers, extension agents, and other educators might utilize it in their work, and examine its utility as a tool for citizen science as well as professional research.
