Abstract

Under the Great Lakes Water Quality Agreement (GLWQA), the Annex 9 Extended Subcommittee on Climate Change Impacts identified a need for an annual climate synthesis product for the region to address an information gap at the annual timescale. A pilot product for 2017, titled ‘2017 Annual Climate Trends and Impacts Summary for the Great Lakes Basin’ aims to provide a timely and succinct summary of the past year’s climate trends, notable climate-related events, and relevant new research, assessments, and activities in the context of the Great Lakes. The United States and Canada coordinated on synthesizing existing information and developing a short and easy-to-understand document, intended to be replicated each year if the product is found to be useful to GLWQA annexes, the Great Lakes Executive Committee, and policy and decision makers at all levels in the Great Lakes. Contributors to the product include Environment and Climate Change Canada, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), the Midwest Regional Climate Center, the NOAA Great Lakes Environmental Research Laboratory, and the Great Lakes Integrated Sciences and Assessments. This presentation will share the 2017 pilot product and solicit feedback on its utility.
